Beyond The Strands: Why You Need To Add A Scalp Exfoliator To Your Haircare Routine

In beauty, hair on February 3, 2021 at 8:30 am

Think your regular shampoo and conditioner is enough?  Think again.  Scalp exfoliation is a important and should be a regular part of your hair care routine.

You might consider yourself to be someone who has a good hair care routine. On a consistent basis you do all of the things that are necessary to have amazing hair: shampoo, condition, treat, moisturize, style, repeat.  You may also get regular trims (and color) as well. For the most part, your hair care routine serves you well but you may find that occasionally your routine, styling tools and products don’t yield the results you desire. Your hair may seem unresponsive: more dry, less shiny, and your scalp flakier than usual.  Not liking what you see, you start searching for possible solutions and come to the conclusion that maybe you need new shampoo and conditioner or a new hair oil or serum. That may help solve the problem temporarily but did you ever stop to consider that what you need is a scalp exfoliator?

When you think about it, a scalp exfoliator serves the same purpose as one that you would use for your face and body.  And like our face and body which becomes dry, flaky, dull, itchy and unresponsive to our usual beauty products, the same thing happens to our scalp.  When that happens, our beloved hair products don’t work as effectively.  Also, with more frequent use of dry shampoo and co-washing which can lead to scalp build up, it makes even more sense to exfoliate.  Healthy hair follicles mean healthy hair and when done on a regular basis, scalp exfoliation provides much needed stimulation which encourages cell turnover, increased blood flow, minerals, nutrients and oxygen – all the things your scalp needs to promote healthy hair growth.  Removing product build up on the scalp will also allow treatments and products to better penetrate the scalp to do their job, thus making your hair look, feel, and perform better.

These Are 5 Skin Care Ingredient Trends To Keep Your Eye On

In beauty, skincare on January 29, 2021 at 8:30 am
Image Courtesy of Cottonbro via Pexels

Every year a new skincare ingredient trend will pop up on our feeds prompting a full on investigation. Do we need it? Who else is using it? Where can we get it? Is it really that good? We jump on our laptops and phones to research said new ingredient trends to see what the tea is. After evaluating our current skincare needs and personal inventory, what usually comes next is a trip to our favorite beauty store or website for a purchase.

The following 5 skincare ingredients are no different to the investigative and purchasing process that we find ourselves in. Keep in mind that these ingredients have always been around however they are having their time in the spotlight and are getting more attention than before. Continue reading to find out what these ingredients are and if you need to add them to your skincare routine.

Niacinamide. Although glycolic will always have a place in many people’s heart and beauty cabinets (including mine), Niacinamide is piquing many beauty enthusiasts’ attention. A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide is known for many of it’s reparative and soothing properties. It is water soluble meaning it dissolves in water and is thus easily absorbed into the skin. It works for most skin types, partners well with other ingredients in your skincare such as AHA/BHA and vitamin C. Niacinamide can help with acne, discoloration and pores and can be used am and pm. It can also help with dehydration because it helps the skin to produce ceramides which is a lipid that guards against moisture loss.

Microbiome Skincare. Often referred to when discussing gut health, the microbiome (or skin flora) also relates to skin. What exactly is the microbiome? It is the community, environment or collection of mainly bacteria, viruses and fungi (microbes) that live on the skin. Now before you freak out from the mere thought of these organisms, please know that these are the good bacteria you want on your skin to keep it healthy. When your skin barrier becomes compromised, it can lead to a myriad of skin issues including acne, folliculitis, eczema, psoriasis and dandruff. Some things that can compromise the microbiome are over-exfoliation, medication, stripping the skin with things like extremely hot showers, as well as lifestyle. Microbiome skincare, which contains pre and pro biotics will help to restore and balance the skin when you need a little extra help.

Dark Spot Correctors. Before you consider going under a laser, consider a dark spot corrector. Dark spot correctors are definitely not new however, more brands are including these types of product in their lineups. Consumers are also educating themselves on the products and ingredients that can help even out skintone. We all know that discoloration can occur after a breakout, injury or inflammation and can be annoying to look at. Dark spot correctors can help these issues go away. Correctors can take the form of a serum or a toner and can include ingredients such as kojic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, azelic acid, niacinamide, and licorice root. To increase the long term effects of dark spot correction, be sure to use sunscreen and don’t pick at blemishes.

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic

Ole Henriksen Glow 2OH Dark Spot Toner

Vitner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum

Faded Brightening & Clearing Gel

Retinol In Body Care. We know about the importance of a good skincare routine that should, on a basic level, include cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and sunscreen. We also know about the multiple benefits of including retinol in said skincare for the face. But what about body care? Because why have amazing skin on your face but from the neck down you look like a wheathered oak tree? Retinol, which is the gold standard has been a mainstay in skin care products for decades. And, as of late, more products such as body wash, body lotions and serums are being created and spotlighted that contain retinol. It helps your skin to act and look younger and helps skin to produce collagen while helping with fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, pores and clarity. Now just imagine how amazing the skin on the rest of your body will look.

Bakuchiol. Often touted as a natural, less irritating alternative to retinol, bakuchiol can yield similar results to retinol. Found in the seeds and leaves babchi plant (Psoralea Corylifolia), bakuchiol is central to ancient Ayurvedic practices and Chinese skincare. Bakuchiol is vegan and contains antioxidants and can help with discoloration, texture issues and free radical damage. It is more tolerated on various skin types and can be an alternative for pregnant women.

For many, working from home has become more of the norm during these times. If this is true for you, then your living space has most likely become your workspace. And even if you work outside of your home, having a great space in your home where your can read and get other projects done is important. Creating these spaces doesn’t have to cost a ton or take a lot of time to create. In fact, creating beautiful and functional spaces that you enjoy is important and can improve productivity. I feel that when you have a beautiful space that you look forward to going to, you produce better work.

Think about how you want to feel when you walk into your home work space. Do you want it to feel like a hug? Do you prefer a minimal aesthetic? Do you want it to feel like an art gallery or like you just walked into an upscale hotel lobby? The choice is yours and remember you are free to switch things up with new decor whenever you feel like it.

Setting Up Your Work Space

If you already have an actual home office, setting up and decorating might be easier for you in the sense that you don’t have to carve out a separate space to work in. If you don’t have extra space, no need to worry. With a little imagination and some key pieces, you can create a functional at home work environment that you love. For instance, you can utilize your kitchen or dining room table or get a small desk that doesn’t take up a lot of space. If possible, set up near a natural light source and of course you can always purchase decorative lighting that adds to the overall look of your work space. If your couch is the only option, consider using nice rolling storage carts and bins for your work and office supplies.

How To Be Productive While In Your Work Space

It is very easy to become distracted and involve yourself in non-work related activities while working from home. This makes it very important to minimize distractions. Start your day knowing what tasks you need to accomplish with a planner or notebook to block out tasks you need to complete. If you are easily distracted by every little sound, use noise canceling headphones. While working from your laptop, only keep the tabs open that you need to complete a specific task. Put your phone away or put it on do not disturb. Also, be sure to create specific blocks of time to start and end your day and eat lunch. Block out time for tasks like for phone calls and emails.

Even when you are at home, consider getting dressed and putting yourself together This is another way to create boundaries between work, play and relaxation. Doing this also fosters productivity. When working from home, I usually like to wear jeans and a sweater, or a slip dress and slides. Nordstrom Rack and Shein are two places where I like to get loungewear for when I’m not leaving the house or working from home.

Lip Oil Is The One Product Your Makeup Bag Needs

In beauty, makeup on January 26, 2021 at 8:30 am

I don’t consider myself to be a glossy lip person – unless I’m wearing nude lip colors. This is because in my humble opinion, matte nude colors can make one look unhealthy. I prefer to leave matte lips to rich and vibrant colors such as red, orange, and deep burgundy.

Sometimes, however, I want to wear a lip product that is nourishing, easy to apply and without a lot of color but still have a little shine. I don’t necessarily want to wear a clear gloss but I don’t want to wear Carmex either (no shade). So what is the solution? A lip oil.

What Exactly Is A Lip Oil?

Lip oils can be considered the love child of a lip gloss, balm and treatment and are intended to give shine and nourishing benefits to the lips. Although not a new concept, there has been an influx of lip oils that are becoming very popular in the beauty space and more brands, from mass market to prestige, are hopping on the lip oil train. Lip oils contain ingredients such as shea butter, jojoba oil and vitamin E that will help to soothe, smooth, repair and give lips a nice shine. Lip oils come in clear and sheer color options without the stickiness and sometimes drying nature of lip gloss and can be worn alone or with your favorite lip color. Lip oils are perfect if you’ve been on the hunt for some time for a lip product that doesn’t leave your lips rusty and crusty and worse off than before you applied it. Continue reading for some of your favorite brands that offer lip oils.

Sephora Collection Clean Glossy Lip Oil. This vegan, cruelty and fragrance free lip oil contains watermelon seed oil for deep hydration in a convenient tube. The formula glides on smoothly without any stickiness.

Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil. If you get weak for gorgeous packaging, this one’s for you. But more than pretty packaging, this anti-aging lip treatment oil contains 14 essential oils, 10 plant oils, and 4 nourishing vitamins to address dryness, chapping and aging.

Tarte Sugar Rush Lip Sip Vegan Lip Oil. Swipe on lusciousness with this rich cruelty free vegan formula. Jojoba, hazel and sunflower oil will keep your lips hydrated, smooth and protected.

Dior Lip Glow Oil. This lip oil uses color reviver technology to interact with the moisture in your lip to create a custom color. The key ingredient of cherry oil will help to moisturize and nourish the lips with one swipe of the generously shaped applicator.

Don’t Sleep Your Day Away: 5 Benefits Of Getting Up Earlier

In lifestyle, productivity on January 15, 2021 at 8:30 am

sunrise on village

As a child, I never had trouble getting up early – and I mean super early.  Like 5 am early.  This was not a problem during the week when I had to go to school.  The weekend, on the other hand, was a different story.  My mom, after having worked all week, looked forward to getting some extra shut eye – at least until 6:30 but there I was – padding into her bedroom, waking her up, wanting to eat and play.  At 5am.  On a Saturday morning.

Not wanting to stifle all that young energy and realizing that I might just be one of those early risers, she would set up my snacks, toys, books and showed me how to turn on the television so I could entertain myself until she awakened from her slumber.  She also purchased dark blinds thinking they would keep the sun out of my bedroom and make me sleep a little later.  Those didn’t work.

Fast forward to my adult years.  I still wake up between 430 and 6am – depending on what my schedule is.  Do I occasionally fall into a pattern of hitting that snooze button and sleeping later?  I sure do.  But since I don’t like feeling frenzied or like I don’t have any control ever my life, I usually get up when I wake up.  Waking up early helps me to be productive, focused and punctual.  I like the feeling of easing into my day and having a good amount of time to do things like workout, review my day, get dressed – all without arriving at my destination all batsh*t crazy.

But then there is you.  Maybe your internal clock doesn’t go off that early or you get up 45 minutes before you have to leave your house.  Perhaps you are a shift worker who gets off work at 1130pm so waking up at 5am is out of the question.  You might be a night owl and find yourself to be more productive later in the day.  Cool.

If, however, you are looking for reasons why getting up before sunrise/ 5am-ish can be beneficial, continue reading…

Fewer Distractions.  First off, when you get up earlier, you get the opportunity to reflect in peace.  This is particularly important if you have a family or roommates.  You will also have free range of your entire living space before everyone else gets up.  Serenity is a beautiful thing.

Gain More Time.  If you are an entrepreneur, student or even someone who is working on a particular project like writing a book, you can gain an extra 5-10 hours a week (or more) just by getting up 1-2 hours earlier.  This can be a good thing especially if you have a full time job.  You will have more mental clarity when you get up earlier and when you get home from work (or wherever), you can focus on other things that require your attention – like your family and friends.

Peak Energy, Creativity And Better Organization.  Assuming that you have had a good night’s rest, you wake up with better mental clarity and you will have more energy to actually start your day.  Those ideas that were on your mind before you went to bed are more likely to be executed.  You can also do things like get ahead of traffic and make sure you have everything you need for your day before you run out of the door.

Wellness Habits Are Put Into Practice.  How many times have you said you want to work out, eat a healthy breakfast, pray/meditate or even take the time to look nice before running out of the door?  Well when you get up earlier, you can actually do all of these things.  When you are able to put these habits into practice, it can enhance your overall well being, focus and confidence.

Sets The Tone.  Getting up early helps to set the tone for your day.  Doing so can foster a sense of accomplishment which can be the foundation of your day, making you feel in charge, able to make solid decisions.  Imagine feeling like a boss before you even leave the house?

Interested in learning how to get up earlier and take charge of your day?  Try the following:

  • Know your why.  Figure out why getting up early is important to you or why you think you should.  Do you have a specific goal you are trying to reach like start a business, write a book or workout and can’t seem to find the energy to do it after a long day? Do you want to feel more focused and in control of your day.  Knowing your why can help you stay committed to you goal or focus.
  • Start small.  If you are used to sleeping to whenever, abruptly trying to get up earlier can be painful.  Start by setting your alarm for an earlier wake up time in small increments.  If you usually wake up at 7am and you decide you want to start waking up at 5am, the thought alone is agonizing and chances are you won’t make that transition.  Instead, start by setting your alarm 10-15 minutes earlier and once you adjust to that time, then you can add on another 15 minutes or so until you are accustomed to waking up at your new time.
  • Plan to go to bed sooner.  Simply put, getting up earlier can be related to getting in bed sooner and getting a full night’s rest.
  • Put the alarm away from the bed.  Having your alarm clock by your bed can encourage you to keep hitting the snooze button and sleeping longer than you planned.  Instead, put your alarm clock on the other side of the room.  But please, when you shut the alarm off, don’t crawl back into bed.
  • Leave the room.  After shutting off that alarm, turn on the lights and leave your room and don’t look back.

If waking up earlier is something you are interested in and you aren’t successful at first, be gentle with yourself and give yourself some time to adjust.  Also, getting up early is not always about being productive.  Sometimes it’s about being able to take your time which is the most relaxing, loving thing you can do for yourself.  At the end of the day, you have to do what works for you.

Are you an early riser or do you sleep in?  What reasons for getting up earlier resonated with you?  Share your thoughts below.

11 Hair Ideas To Inspire Your Next Look

In hair on January 13, 2021 at 8:30 am

We’ve all been there:  You look in the mirror at your reflection and wonder what to do with your hair.   Should you cut it short or completely shave it off?  Should you color it? And if you color it, what color should it be and will you have it done professionally or will you do it yourself?  Or should you buy some hair from your favorite beauty supply store/online site and keep it moving?  Whatever the case, although you might have many questions, there are also many solutions available to you to bring some hair excitement back into your life.

There are many outlets (magazines, celebrities, social media) that provide countless ideas of hairstyles that one can try next.  Whether it’s a new cut, color, style or accessory, changing your hair is one of the quickest ways to switch up your look and put an extra pep in your step. Many hair looks, regardless of the length, texture or color your natural hair, can also be achieved with enhancements such as wigs, weaves and hair pieces, especially if you don’t want to do too much with your hair.  Keep reading to find out what hair looks, although not necessarily new, are still going strong for this season:

Bobs.  I love the various looks/styles that bobs offer.  The look can work on various face shapes since the cut and color can be customized to compliment one’s particular features.   Bobs also allow for maximum styling versatility because you can wear it bone straight, wavy or curly.  Consider a blunt cut bob, middle part, wavy, choppy or even a lob.

Pixie Cut.  There is nothing like a short haircut to show off amazing bone structure. And, with the right length, you can still have styling versatility.  Depending on the length, you can experiment with a side part, soft curls, spikes, and finger waves.  You can even experiment with accessories such as barrettes and headbands.

Middle Parts.  Although not necessarily a style, switching up a current  hairstyle with a middle part might be the way to go.  Parting your hair in the middle can lend itself to greater  styling  versatility and can work on a multitude of hair styles such as wavy styles, braided styles, bobs, braid-outs, twist-outs and locs.  If you aren’t comfortable with a full on middle part, move the part slightly off-center or just do a side part.

Braids.  Braids re-appeared in the biggest way last year.  Reminiscent of many childhoods (including mine) as well as the 90’s – think Poetic Justice circa 1993, braids have shown up and shown out in the most intricate and creative ways.  From cornrows, box braids, feed ins, crochet styles, twists and even locks: the styling options are endless. We will also continue to see intricate parting designs and bold color displayed with these braided styles, taking one’s look to the next level of slay.  To understand the significance of this craft in African and African American culture/history, start by reading this and this.

Hair Accessories.  Who said gems were just for earrings, necklaces and shoes?  Well they aren’t.  Hair accessories have been trending for quite some time and don’t show signs of slowing down.  Gem encrusted accessories have taken the lead and shows up in barrettes, headbands and hair pins.  In many cases, hair jewelry will allow you to get your bling on without breaking the bank.

Ponytails.  From high, low, and various textures as well as gravity defying lengths, there is nothing like a ponytail – the perfect choice for a sophisticated, yet sexy look.

Half Up/Half Down.  Consider this the ponytails’s cousin, a style that will allow you the playfulness of a ponytail while still allowing texture to take center stage.

Straight and Sleek.  You don’t have to just wear this style just straight down in front of or in back of your shoulders.  Have some fun with a middle or deep side part, with accessories, or bangs (try clip in bangs if you aren’t ready to commit to a bang for real). You can even have a little bit of tousled texture or wear it slicked back with bold earrings for an edgy look.

Money Piece Highlights.  An updated take on the chunky highlights of the 2000’s, money piece highlights are way less dramatic and more complimentary for the shape of one’s face and over all color of the one’s hair color.  It’s also a great way to maintain the health of your hair because the highlights are not used all over the hair – just in the front.  Those front pieces are lifted in balayage and toned separately as opposed to using foils which results in a more natural blended look.

Wigs.  Whether made of real or synthetic hair, the wigs of today come in a variety of colors, lengths, textures and styles.  Furthermore, they have become a fashion accessory for many.  They allow you to create multiple looks based on how you feel or what outfit you are wearing.

Head Wraps.  Turbans and head wraps, which date back centuries, are not just for bad hair days.  They are a look in and of themselves and are the ultimate accessory which can add color to any outfit and elevates any look.

Textured Nails. Creativity certainly has no boundaries as people become more creative with nail art. Toward the end of last year, cable knit or sweater nails started gaining more traction in various nail spaces. Mix-match Nails (Indie Nails). These nails take multicolored nails to the next level. Going boldly where no other nail design dares to go, each nail not only has a different color but also a different design. In addition, each nail may have a different shape. For instance, consider one stiletto nail while the other nails are coffin shaped.

Stylized French Tip Nails. French tipped nails have evolved into extremely creative expressions of one’s unique taste. Once preserved for the minimalist and the “professional” with a basic white tip, French tip designs continue evolve with bold color and design combinations as well as color blocking. In addition, French tips will continue to be paired as an accent with other creatively designed and blinged – out nails.

Logo Nails. Brand logos are no longer reserved for clothing, accessories and footwear. A big trend in nails since last year has been nails designed with the logos of popular brands – luxury in particular. Whether meticulously created by hand or by applying a pre-designed decal to the nails, anyone will be able to show love for their favorite brand (or personality) on their nails.

Negative Space Nails. Negative space nails are still a thing and are a great way to update a basic manicure. This nail design is also a great way to subtly push the envelope in more conservative or restrictive work environments. Using any color and any design, negative space nail art can be used on all nails or used on a few nails for an accent. What’s also great about negative space nails is that depending on if the negative space is near your cuticle, it will be harder to tell when you need a fill.

Press On Nails. Press on nails may have become the alternative during quarantine, but they have been trending for quite some time. Press on nails offer major convenience, can be purchased almost anywhere, and can be done in the comfort of your own home. You can switch up your style at any given time with various colors, lengths, shapes, finishes and designs. With the right prep and application, you can continue to do your regular activities as well as keep them on for up to two weeks.

Basic Manicure. Nothing is more beautiful than well groomed and manicured hands. Basic manicures are coming back to the forefront as an option for nails, especially since people had to start doing their nails because nail salons were closed. And with all of the products and tools available for at home use, your nails can always be done.

6 Beauty Trends To Keep Your Eye On In 2021

In beauty, how to, makeup, makeup artist tools, skincare on January 8, 2021 at 8:30 am

It’s no secret that 2020 was a year filled with many unexpected twist and turns. Daily life was upended and most people were confined to their homes. If you did leave the house, you had to have a mask on.

If you didn’t already work in an industry where a mask was required (surgeon, auto mechanic, etc.) chances are the mask may have wrecked havoc on your entire beauty routine. From maskne to not needing to apply the usual highlight, contour and favorite lip, some beauty routines became less important while learning to navigate what was quickly becoming the new norm. And, with all of the extra time that many had on their hands, increased beauty experiments and online shopping became a form of entertainment to cope. Increased DIY also became a part of the new norm as many tried to figure out how to maintain their skin, hair and nails since everything was shut down. Endless zoom calls required you to take what you learned from your Instagram feed and YouTube and apply them to yourself.

Now that the new year has begun, it will be interesting to see what is new, what is re-invented what will remain the same as time progresses. Continue reading to discover 6 beauty trends to keep your eye on throughout the upcoming season.

Glowy Skin. Skin that radiates is a goal that everyone has. In times past the quickest way to achieve that enviable glow was with various forms of highlighters and luminizers. This method of topical glow is perfectly fine and will not go away. I do find however that many people desire the health of their skin to be the source of their glow. This can be achieved many different ways, particularly with a regular routine of cleansing, exfoliation, and a healthy lifestyle. To get that added boost, add in a serum that targets radiance and correction specifically and apply your moisturizer after.

Foundation Hybrids. Long gone are the days of heavy foundations that clog your pores and assault your skin. Think of foundation hybrids as a relationship between foundation and skincare. These new formulations have a combination of pigments, SPF as well as ingredients to help improve the skin such as antioxidants, kombucha, and peptides. Foundation hybrids allow breathability and flexibility on the skin as well as various levels of coverage when you switch your tool and technique.

Colorful eyes. Because of masks, now is the time more than ever to flex your makeup skills and play up your eyes. And what better way to accentuate your eyes than with this season’s trend of colorful eyes with colored mascaras, liners and eyeshadows. The wonderful thing about these bright colorful eye trends is that you can keep it minimal or monochromatic with just a liner or mascara or go all out with creating a glamorous look with a colorful smoky or spotlight eye.

Bushy Full Brows. Eyebrows are extremely important as they are the architecture of your face. If your brows are not on point, why bother with anything else? As of late we have seen a lot more of a relaxed yet well structured brow as opposed to the highly stylized bold Insta brow. Brows styles have a specific microbladed look for natural effect. And fear not – if you naturally have minimal to sparse brows, you can still fake it with many of the brow markers that more brands are creating.

Red/Red Orange Lips. A red lip never goes out of style. Regardless of the season or what other popular lip trends there may be, a red lip – particularly matte – is forever classy and an essential item for your makeup collection. And yes it is normal and ok to several favorite red lips. When wearing a red lip, always remember to exfoliate, prep and line before applying your red lip.

Lashes. Daily application of false lashes will never go out of style. While this may be true, many are seeking other alternatives to this daily process to make their eyes pop. Lash extensions may be an option for some if they are comfortable with going to a salon. For those who don’t mind taking their beauty into their own hands, there are less expensive at home options such as lashes that last for 7-10 days without having to remove and reapply daily.
