Comfort has been the name of the game since lockdown. While spending more time at home, loungewear and slippers have been the clothing of choice. Other variations of slip on and go footwear are also the go to when stepping out to run errands. While a good stiletto will never go out of style and has it’s place in creating fabulous looks, many of this season’s shoe styles capitalizes on maximum comfort with style. Continue reading to find out what shoes to add to your collection.

Today’s slippers are carefully and purposefully constructed in various materials, heels and embellishments. Worn with jeans or dresses, these slippers are updated with soles that allow for wear outside of the house.

UGG Fuzzette

Steve Madden Retreat

Sneakers. Always a staple in countless shoe wardrobes, this season’s sneakers have a few different silhouettes including color block, retro (think new balance) and canvas. In addition, because sneakers have become acceptable footwear for places other than the gym, these styles can be dressed up or down for most ocassions.

Merrell Women’s Alpine Sneaker

New Balance 574 Core

Cariuma Red Canvas

Platforms. Sky high platforms are all the rage and also leave you wondering how to walk safely. Pair these platforms with flowy silhouettes for boho chic appeal or with cleaner lines for a more tailored look.

Vince Camuto Celosia Platform Sandal

Loafers/Oxfords. Whether flat or with a stacked heel, loafers are reminiscent of both elementary school days and your grandpa’s footwear. Today’s iterations are created with materials and embellishments such as animal print, fur and gems.

Tory Burch Ruby Mid Heel Loafer

Chains. These days, chains are not only for the jewelry we wear around our necks and wrist but also for our shoes. This style of shoe is great to partner with a minimalist/monochromatic outfit to add a shiny pop to your look.

Jimmy Choo Sae Ankle Chain Leather Sandles

Zara Mesh Heels With Chain Strap

Clear/Perspex Heels. Clear heels show no signs of slowing down. These can be considered the perfect nude making them easy to wear with anything. Pair these shoes with leggings, skinny jeans or a mini skirt for a look that is sexy and on trend. Make sure you get a pedicure as your entire foot is on display.

Your Beauty Products Have A Shelf Life – Learn When To Toss These Items To Ensure Your Safety.

In beauty, makeup, skincare on January 20, 2021 at 8:30 am

There is a big chance that the makeup you used this morning has expired.

Lets face it – most of us are beauty product hoarders.  We hold onto lipsticks and eye shadows forever because we don’t want to let them go.  It’s also cool to collect and hoard product just to say we have something.

And, even though we hoard makeup, we also love new beauty products as well.  The thrill you get when you open a new tube of lipstick or blush and apply that first swipe is like no other.  It’s kind of like exhaling.

Whether said beauty product is something we’ve purchased ourselves, received as a gift or won in some type of social media give away, we all pride ourselves with having the latest and greatest.  And let’s not even talk about an order that is coming in the mail:  we stalk the delivery guy, staring out of the window, making sure the doorbell is still working and incessantly check the tracking status to see where our package of hopes and dreams are- even though we literally just placed the order.  Not to mention, when our favorite makeup artist, beauty guru or celebrity launches a new product, no moment or cost is spared to purchase the newest palette, highlighter or foundation.

But what happens after the initial joy of our new makeup wears off?  Like the older, once beloved products,  it gets tossed to the side, stored away in a drawer somewhere until we decide to wear a particular product again.  If your makeup falls into the latter category, proceed with caution before you bring that product back into circulation:  chances are that product has expired.

What is a makeup shelf life?

Makeup can be stored away for a long period (up to 3 years) of time before it actually reaches you.  These products will eventually go bad but it will take longer because they are not opened and are usually stored in a cool dark place, preserving the shelf life.  For the purpose of this discussion however, we will discuss the shortened shelf life of product after purchase, when it is opened and exposed to various conditions.

All makeup has a PAO – period after opening, which is marked by an expiration date.  This expiration date is usually on the back of packaging with a small jar with a number in it.  This number indicates the life span of that product after opening.  Since most people don’t keep the original packaging their product comes in, it’s a good idea to write the date you opened the product or keep a log.  This is extra work but makeup that has gone bad is a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause a host issues such as irritation, swelling, breakouts and infection that may require medical attention.

Having said all of that, how do you know when to throw your makeup and other beauty products away?  When there is a change in color, texture, consistency, odor or performance. If your product is preservative free, you will definitely need to be mindful of the shelf life.  Keep the following guidelines in mind when purchasing and storing product:

  • Control the temperature your makeup is stored in.  If possible, don’t keep your makeup in the bathroom where the temperatures fluctuate consistently and definitely do not leave your makeup in your car.
  • Don’t share your makeup and replace eye makeup after an eye infection.
  • Wash your hands before using your product.
  • Avoid jars when possible.  Every time you open a jar and stick your fingers in your product, it becomes contaminated.  Use a spatula or cotton swab instead.
  • Use a makeup sanitizer spray.  Also use a tissue to wipe off layer of uncertainty and make sure you clean your brushes.
  • Although it can be more economically sound to purchase the larger size of something, consider how often you will use the product.
  • If you find that you need to dispose of a product, do so by putting it in the garbage instead of pouring down the drain to avoid clogging the drain and contributing to contaminated water ways.

Below is a list of the estimated shelf life after opening for frequently used products (give or take):

Foundation

  • Oil free – 12 months
  • Cream and liquid – 18 months to 2 years

Concealer

  • Sticks – up to 18 months
  • Liquid and cream – up to 6 months

Powders

  • Most powder products, whether they are foundation, eye shadow, blush, bronzer or highlighter, can last up to 2 years.

Eyeliners

  • Pencils can last up to 2 years.  By sharpening the pencil before use, you will shave off some of the layer of uncertainty.
  • Liquid and gel – 3 months

Cream Eye shadow – up to 6 months.

Mascara – up to 3 months.

Brushes 2-5 years, sometimes longer with proper cleaning, conditioning, and storage.

Lipstick/liner – up to 12 months and gloss up to 2 years.

Cleanser/toner – up to 12 months.

Eye Cream – 6 months to 2 years

Serum/Treatment – 6 months to 2 years

Face/body moisturizer – up to two years.

Sunscreen – up to 12 months.

Nail Polish – up to 12 months.

Don’t Sleep Your Day Away: 5 Benefits Of Getting Up Earlier

In lifestyle, productivity on January 15, 2021 at 8:30 am

sunrise on village

As a child, I never had trouble getting up early – and I mean super early.  Like 5 am early.  This was not a problem during the week when I had to go to school.  The weekend, on the other hand, was a different story.  My mom, after having worked all week, looked forward to getting some extra shut eye – at least until 6:30 but there I was – padding into her bedroom, waking her up, wanting to eat and play.  At 5am.  On a Saturday morning.

Not wanting to stifle all that young energy and realizing that I might just be one of those early risers, she would set up my snacks, toys, books and showed me how to turn on the television so I could entertain myself until she awakened from her slumber.  She also purchased dark blinds thinking they would keep the sun out of my bedroom and make me sleep a little later.  Those didn’t work.

Fast forward to my adult years.  I still wake up between 430 and 6am – depending on what my schedule is.  Do I occasionally fall into a pattern of hitting that snooze button and sleeping later?  I sure do.  But since I don’t like feeling frenzied or like I don’t have any control ever my life, I usually get up when I wake up.  Waking up early helps me to be productive, focused and punctual.  I like the feeling of easing into my day and having a good amount of time to do things like workout, review my day, get dressed – all without arriving at my destination all batsh*t crazy.

But then there is you.  Maybe your internal clock doesn’t go off that early or you get up 45 minutes before you have to leave your house.  Perhaps you are a shift worker who gets off work at 1130pm so waking up at 5am is out of the question.  You might be a night owl and find yourself to be more productive later in the day.  Cool.

If, however, you are looking for reasons why getting up before sunrise/ 5am-ish can be beneficial, continue reading…

Fewer Distractions.  First off, when you get up earlier, you get the opportunity to reflect in peace.  This is particularly important if you have a family or roommates.  You will also have free range of your entire living space before everyone else gets up.  Serenity is a beautiful thing.

Gain More Time.  If you are an entrepreneur, student or even someone who is working on a particular project like writing a book, you can gain an extra 5-10 hours a week (or more) just by getting up 1-2 hours earlier.  This can be a good thing especially if you have a full time job.  You will have more mental clarity when you get up earlier and when you get home from work (or wherever), you can focus on other things that require your attention – like your family and friends.

Peak Energy, Creativity And Better Organization.  Assuming that you have had a good night’s rest, you wake up with better mental clarity and you will have more energy to actually start your day.  Those ideas that were on your mind before you went to bed are more likely to be executed.  You can also do things like get ahead of traffic and make sure you have everything you need for your day before you run out of the door.

Wellness Habits Are Put Into Practice.  How many times have you said you want to work out, eat a healthy breakfast, pray/meditate or even take the time to look nice before running out of the door?  Well when you get up earlier, you can actually do all of these things.  When you are able to put these habits into practice, it can enhance your overall well being, focus and confidence.

Sets The Tone.  Getting up early helps to set the tone for your day.  Doing so can foster a sense of accomplishment which can be the foundation of your day, making you feel in charge, able to make solid decisions.  Imagine feeling like a boss before you even leave the house?

Interested in learning how to get up earlier and take charge of your day?  Try the following:

  • Know your why.  Figure out why getting up early is important to you or why you think you should.  Do you have a specific goal you are trying to reach like start a business, write a book or workout and can’t seem to find the energy to do it after a long day? Do you want to feel more focused and in control of your day.  Knowing your why can help you stay committed to you goal or focus.
  • Start small.  If you are used to sleeping to whenever, abruptly trying to get up earlier can be painful.  Start by setting your alarm for an earlier wake up time in small increments.  If you usually wake up at 7am and you decide you want to start waking up at 5am, the thought alone is agonizing and chances are you won’t make that transition.  Instead, start by setting your alarm 10-15 minutes earlier and once you adjust to that time, then you can add on another 15 minutes or so until you are accustomed to waking up at your new time.
  • Plan to go to bed sooner.  Simply put, getting up earlier can be related to getting in bed sooner and getting a full night’s rest.
  • Put the alarm away from the bed.  Having your alarm clock by your bed can encourage you to keep hitting the snooze button and sleeping longer than you planned.  Instead, put your alarm clock on the other side of the room.  But please, when you shut the alarm off, don’t crawl back into bed.
  • Leave the room.  After shutting off that alarm, turn on the lights and leave your room and don’t look back.

If waking up earlier is something you are interested in and you aren’t successful at first, be gentle with yourself and give yourself some time to adjust.  Also, getting up early is not always about being productive.  Sometimes it’s about being able to take your time which is the most relaxing, loving thing you can do for yourself.  At the end of the day, you have to do what works for you.

Are you an early riser or do you sleep in?  What reasons for getting up earlier resonated with you?  Share your thoughts below.

11 Hair Ideas To Inspire Your Next Look

In hair on January 13, 2021 at 8:30 am

We’ve all been there:  You look in the mirror at your reflection and wonder what to do with your hair.   Should you cut it short or completely shave it off?  Should you color it? And if you color it, what color should it be and will you have it done professionally or will you do it yourself?  Or should you buy some hair from your favorite beauty supply store/online site and keep it moving?  Whatever the case, although you might have many questions, there are also many solutions available to you to bring some hair excitement back into your life.

There are many outlets (magazines, celebrities, social media) that provide countless ideas of hairstyles that one can try next.  Whether it’s a new cut, color, style or accessory, changing your hair is one of the quickest ways to switch up your look and put an extra pep in your step. Many hair looks, regardless of the length, texture or color your natural hair, can also be achieved with enhancements such as wigs, weaves and hair pieces, especially if you don’t want to do too much with your hair.  Keep reading to find out what hair looks, although not necessarily new, are still going strong for this season:

Bobs.  I love the various looks/styles that bobs offer.  The look can work on various face shapes since the cut and color can be customized to compliment one’s particular features.   Bobs also allow for maximum styling versatility because you can wear it bone straight, wavy or curly.  Consider a blunt cut bob, middle part, wavy, choppy or even a lob.

Pixie Cut.  There is nothing like a short haircut to show off amazing bone structure. And, with the right length, you can still have styling versatility.  Depending on the length, you can experiment with a side part, soft curls, spikes, and finger waves.  You can even experiment with accessories such as barrettes and headbands.

Middle Parts.  Although not necessarily a style, switching up a current  hairstyle with a middle part might be the way to go.  Parting your hair in the middle can lend itself to greater  styling  versatility and can work on a multitude of hair styles such as wavy styles, braided styles, bobs, braid-outs, twist-outs and locs.  If you aren’t comfortable with a full on middle part, move the part slightly off-center or just do a side part.

Braids.  Braids re-appeared in the biggest way last year.  Reminiscent of many childhoods (including mine) as well as the 90’s – think Poetic Justice circa 1993, braids have shown up and shown out in the most intricate and creative ways.  From cornrows, box braids, feed ins, crochet styles, twists and even locks: the styling options are endless. We will also continue to see intricate parting designs and bold color displayed with these braided styles, taking one’s look to the next level of slay.  To understand the significance of this craft in African and African American culture/history, start by reading this and this.

Hair Accessories.  Who said gems were just for earrings, necklaces and shoes?  Well they aren’t.  Hair accessories have been trending for quite some time and don’t show signs of slowing down.  Gem encrusted accessories have taken the lead and shows up in barrettes, headbands and hair pins.  In many cases, hair jewelry will allow you to get your bling on without breaking the bank.

Ponytails.  From high, low, and various textures as well as gravity defying lengths, there is nothing like a ponytail – the perfect choice for a sophisticated, yet sexy look.

Half Up/Half Down.  Consider this the ponytails’s cousin, a style that will allow you the playfulness of a ponytail while still allowing texture to take center stage.

Straight and Sleek.  You don’t have to just wear this style just straight down in front of or in back of your shoulders.  Have some fun with a middle or deep side part, with accessories, or bangs (try clip in bangs if you aren’t ready to commit to a bang for real). You can even have a little bit of tousled texture or wear it slicked back with bold earrings for an edgy look.

Money Piece Highlights.  An updated take on the chunky highlights of the 2000’s, money piece highlights are way less dramatic and more complimentary for the shape of one’s face and over all color of the one’s hair color.  It’s also a great way to maintain the health of your hair because the highlights are not used all over the hair – just in the front.  Those front pieces are lifted in balayage and toned separately as opposed to using foils which results in a more natural blended look.

Wigs.  Whether made of real or synthetic hair, the wigs of today come in a variety of colors, lengths, textures and styles.  Furthermore, they have become a fashion accessory for many.  They allow you to create multiple looks based on how you feel or what outfit you are wearing.

Head Wraps.  Turbans and head wraps, which date back centuries, are not just for bad hair days.  They are a look in and of themselves and are the ultimate accessory which can add color to any outfit and elevates any look.

7 Nail Trends To Try In 2021

In beauty, Nails on January 11, 2021 at 8:30 am

Nails continue to be recognized as the ultimate accessory that you allows you to experiment with new looks without major commitment. This season’s nail looks show that anything goes and that creativity is endless. DIY nails have also become more of a way of life and we are also seeing updated versions of styles we have come to know and love from seasons past. With so many options, there is something for everyone. Continue reading to discover the current nail trends of 2021.

Textured Nails. Creativity certainly has no boundaries as people become more creative with nail art. Toward the end of last year, cable knit or sweater nails started gaining more traction in various nail spaces. A textured, non shiny finish, sweater nails are created with gel polish and clear acrylic powder and can add a different kind of pop to nails.

Mix-match Nails (Indie Nails). These nails take multicolored nails to the next level. Going boldly where no other nail design dares to go, each nail not only has a different color but also a different design. In addition, each nail may have a different shape. For instance, consider one stiletto nail while the other nails are coffin shaped.

Stylized French Tip Nails. French tipped nails have evolved into extremely creative expressions of one’s unique taste. Once preserved for the minimalist and the “professional” with a basic white tip, French tip designs continue evolve with bold color and design combinations as well as color blocking. In addition, French tips will continue to be paired as an accent with other creatively designed and blinged – out nails.

Logo Nails. Brand logos are no longer reserved for clothing, accessories and footwear. A big trend in nails since last year has been nails designed with the logos of popular brands – luxury in particular. Whether meticulously created by hand or by applying a pre-designed decal to the nails, anyone will be able to show love for their favorite brand (or personality) on their nails.

Negative Space Nails. Negative space nails are still a thing and are a great way to update a basic manicure. This nail design is also a great way to subtly push the envelope in more conservative or restrictive work environments. Using any color and any design, negative space nail art can be used on all nails or used on a few nails for an accent. What’s also great about negative space nails is that depending on if the negative space is near your cuticle, it will be harder to tell when you need a fill.

Press On Nails. Press on nails may have become the alternative during quarantine, but they have been trending for quite some time. Press on nails offer major convenience, can be purchased almost anywhere, and can be done in the comfort of your own home. You can switch up your style at any given time with various colors, lengths, shapes, finishes and designs. With the right prep and application, you can continue to do your regular activities as well as keep them on for up to two weeks.

Basic Manicure. Nothing is more beautiful than well groomed and manicured hands. Basic manicures are coming back to the forefront as an option for nails, especially since people had to start doing their nails because nail salons were closed. And with all of the products and tools available for at home use, your nails can always be done.

6 Beauty Trends To Keep Your Eye On In 2021

In beauty, how to, makeup, makeup artist tools, skincare on January 8, 2021 at 8:30 am

It’s no secret that 2020 was a year filled with many unexpected twist and turns. Daily life was upended and most people were confined to their homes. If you did leave the house, you had to have a mask on.

If you didn’t already work in an industry where a mask was required (surgeon, auto mechanic, etc.) chances are the mask may have wrecked havoc on your entire beauty routine. From maskne to not needing to apply the usual highlight, contour and favorite lip, some beauty routines became less important while learning to navigate what was quickly becoming the new norm. And, with all of the extra time that many had on their hands, increased beauty experiments and online shopping became a form of entertainment to cope. Increased DIY also became a part of the new norm as many tried to figure out how to maintain their skin, hair and nails since everything was shut down. Endless zoom calls required you to take what you learned from your Instagram feed and YouTube and apply them to yourself.

Now that the new year has begun, it will be interesting to see what is new, what is re-invented what will remain the same as time progresses. Continue reading to discover 6 beauty trends to keep your eye on throughout the upcoming season.

Glowy Skin. Skin that radiates is a goal that everyone has. In times past the quickest way to achieve that enviable glow was with various forms of highlighters and luminizers. This method of topical glow is perfectly fine and will not go away. I do find however that many people desire the health of their skin to be the source of their glow. This can be achieved many different ways, particularly with a regular routine of cleansing, exfoliation, and a healthy lifestyle. To get that added boost, add in a serum that targets radiance and correction specifically and apply your moisturizer after.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops

Laneige Glowy Makeup Serum

OKO Skincare Glow Hydrating Serum

Pixi Skintreats Overnight Glow Serum

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Serum

Foundation Hybrids. Long gone are the days of heavy foundations that clog your pores and assault your skin. Think of foundation hybrids as a relationship between foundation and skincare. These new formulations have a combination of pigments, SPF as well as ingredients to help improve the skin such as antioxidants, kombucha, and peptides. Foundation hybrids allow breathability and flexibility on the skin as well as various levels of coverage when you switch your tool and technique.

Live Tinted Huestick

Urban Decay Hydromaniac Tinted Glow Hydrator

Kosas Tinted Face Oil Foundation

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

Colorful eyes. Because of masks, now is the time more than ever to flex your makeup skills and play up your eyes. And what better way to accentuate your eyes than with this season’s trend of colorful eyes with colored mascaras, liners and eyeshadows. The wonderful thing about these bright colorful eye trends is that you can keep it minimal or monochromatic with just a liner or mascara or go all out with creating a glamorous look with a colorful smoky or spotlight eye.

ColourPop BFF Mascara

YSL Beaute Vinyl Couture Mascara

Limecrime Astronomical Mascara

L’oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara

NYX Professional Makeup Vivid Brights Eyeliner

Shany Cosmetics Indelible Gel Liner

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

Juvia’s Place Warrior 3 Palette

Violet Voss Mini Forget Me Not Palette

Limecrime Venus 3 Eyeshadow Palette

Bushy Full Brows. Eyebrows are extremely important as they are the architecture of your face. If your brows are not on point, why bother with anything else? As of late we have seen a lot more of a relaxed yet well structured brow as opposed to the highly stylized bold Insta brow. Brows styles have a specific microbladed look for natural effect. And fear not – if you naturally have minimal to sparse brows, you can still fake it with many of the brow markers that more brands are creating.

Benefit Microfilling Brow Pen

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pen

Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen

MAC Shape + Shade Brow Tint

Patrick Ta Major Brow Shaping Wax

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Primer

Makeup Revolution Soap Brow

Red/Red Orange Lips. A red lip never goes out of style. Regardless of the season or what other popular lip trends there may be, a red lip – particularly matte – is forever classy and an essential item for your makeup collection. And yes it is normal and ok to several favorite red lips. When wearing a red lip, always remember to exfoliate, prep and line before applying your red lip.

Nars Cosmetics Lipstick (Heatwave)

Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick (999 Matte)

Buxom Cosmetics Full Force Plumping Lipstick (Powerhouse)

Nars Cosmetics Powermatte Lip Pigment (Light My Fire)

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick (Lady Balls)

Lashes. Daily application of false lashes will never go out of style. While this may be true, many are seeking other alternatives to this daily process to make their eyes pop. Lash extensions may be an option for some if they are comfortable with going to a salon. For those who don’t mind taking their beauty into their own hands, there are less expensive at home options such as lashes that last for 7-10 days without having to remove and reapply daily.

10 Tips To Deal With Difficult People

In career, how to, lifestyle on January 6, 2021 at 8:30 am

In an ideal world, getting along with everyone you encounter would be a wonderful thing. No conflict. No yelling. No getting annoyed or angry. Life would be wonderful.

Unfortunately this is not reality. In fact, you may be the peaceful and easygoing type but in many of the relationships and interactions you have, you will have to deal with someone who irks your nerves to infinity. Some people, although they are difficult, may be easier to deal with because you may be able to tell them politely where to go and how to get there. Other people you may find yourself needing to pray, meditate and/or quickly formulate some type of strategy on how to interact with them so that you can remain civil and stay out of jail.

All jokes aside, how do you deal with those who don’t listen or who always have something critical and snarky to say? How do you handle those who overstep their boundaries, lie or question everything you do?You can always avoid that person but in many cases that is not feasible. Whether the difficulty lies with family, friends or even coworkers, there are strategies that you can use to navigate relationships that are more difficult.

Stay Calm. When you find yourself being confronted by someone you find difficult to interact with, stay calm, particularly if the other person gets emotional. You don’t want to add fuel to the fire. By staying calm, you will be more rational and able to discuss the topic at hand.

Seek Feedback. When you have a difficult time with someone, seek feedback from other intelligent people in your life. It can be a good idea to find out if you have the right perspective of the situation and the person you find yourself at odds with.

Seek Understanding. In relation to the person you find difficult, make sure you have understanding of what is being ask of you or what the other person is saying about you or the situation at hand. Ask questions. Check in periodically and keep notes for reference. Also, keep in mind that people don’t think the same way that you do so again seeking understanding is critical.

Communicate And Build Rapport. If possible, take some time to get to know the person. If appropriate, plan a fun activity where everyone can let their guard down a bit. Also, seek to give and gain honest feedback. Be sure that any feedback you give is rooted in fact and not emotion.

Remain Respectful. Refrain from using insults and name calling (no matter how deserving or true these words may be.)

Set Boundaries. You have the right be respected and to tell the person you are at odds with to interact with you in a respectful manner.

Avoid Accusations. Begin with “I feel” statements as opposed to pointing the finger and using an accusatory tone.

Speak Only When Necessary. Sometimes relationships with certain people is just not in the cards. Keep interactions brief and cordial and communicate only when necessary.

Take Conflict To Next Level. If this is a work or school situation and you have already had a 1×1 with the person to tell them how you feel and that still doesn’t work, take your concern to HR or an administrator.

Walk Away. This can be easier said than done but when there is not much to lose other than a headache and aggravation, walk away.

34 Hacks For A Happier and Healthier Lifestyle

Year after year people head into the new year with resolutions and the sweeping changes they want to make. Work out. Eat healthier. Read more. Start a side hustle. It’s something about the start of a new year that makes people want to clean slate everything and create big changes in their lives. And while some people are more successful than others in carrying out commitments, once the novelty of the new year wears off, by January 7 many people usually find themselves slipping back into their old ways.

There are a few reasons why this may happen. It can be that the goals are set without real intention or a plan in place. It’s very easy to say you are going to do something but without creating the steps necessary to accomplish a goal, what you are trying to do is merely a thought. Also, when you try to tackle too many things at once, it can be overwhelming to execute your goals altogether.

Whatever the case, don’t feel bad if you haven’t made any resolutions or if you’ve made some in the past and missed the mark. And if you have (made resolutions), be sure they are intentional and that you have a plan in place to make sustainable changes. Also, be sure that you aren’t making resolutions just because everyone else is doing it. You may not even feel the need to do something other than what you normally do. That’s fine. You will make changes when you are ready.

With that being said, the following list is not about creating new years resolutions per se. Think of it as a non-exhaustive list of hacks that you can do over time to create a happier, more healthy lifestyle.

  1. Ask for help. You don’t have to do everything by yourself.
  2. Update your undergarments and sleepwear. It’s the change you never knew you needed. You’re welcome.
  3. Finish what you started.
  4. Expect more from yourself. Stop letting yourself down.
  5. Stop seeking approval from those outside of your circle of respect. Even within that circle – stop.
  6. End relationships that are draining, unsupportive and lack reciprocity.
  7. Take an online course.
  8. Update your hair, makeup and wardrobe.
  9. Start a virtual book club.
  10. Eat more fruits and veggies.
  11. Be a tourist in your own town.
  12. Practice gratitude.
  13. Enjoy the moment.
  14. Improve your posture. Stand up straight and hold your head up high.
  15. Eat more nutrient dense foods instead of focusing so much on calories.
  16. Celebrate the small wins.
  17. Declutter your closet, old phone numbers, texts and photos.
  18. Be intentional about prioritizing healthy relationships.
  19. Try an online workout.
  20. Make your bed every morning.
  21. Schedule your doctor appointments.
  22. Slow down while eating.
  23. Switch to a sonic toothbrush and scrape your tongue.
  24. Redecorate.
  25. Drink more water.
  26. Go to bed earlier.
  27. Buy yourself flowers and plants and light those candles.
  28. Create an evening wind down routine.
  29. Don’t hit the snooze button.
  30. Stop trying to prove yourself to anyone but you. You don’t owe anyone a dog and pony show.
  31. Keep track of your finances on a daily basis.
  32. Get up at the same time every day.
  33. Give yourself permission to do nothing for the day.
  34. Set boundaries with yourself.

On My Radar: My Beauty, Fashion and Lifestyle Roundup

In beauty, clean beauty, fashion, hair, skincare, style on January 1, 2021 at 8:30 am

On My Radar is a roundup of the things that I love, use, discovered or have piqued my interest that I think you should know about.

Herbivore Lapis Depuffing Facial Roller. Adding certain tools to your skin care routine can be the boost your skin needs. I have heard of the multiple benefits of facial rolling which is a technique/beauty ritual that dates back to ancient China and decided that I needed to add a facial roller to my skin care routine. I have the Herbivore Lapis Depuffing Facial Roller and let me say this is literally one of the most beautiful tools I have seen. It is double ended and has a deep blue, marble – like stone with gold accents on the handle. It has a great weight, feels nice in my hand and is easy to use. I use the larger side on my forehead, cheeks, chin and neck and the smaller side around my eyes, nose and lips.

There are many benefits to using a facial roller. First, it helps to push your products deeper into your skin. I like to take my oils, warm them up in my hands and press into my skin and neck. Then I use my roller to push the oils deeper into my skin. Facial rolling helps to massage the skin which can be very helpful and relaxing, especially after a long day. Facial rolling also helps stimulate the lymphatic system which can be good for releasing toxins and stagnant fluid in various areas of the face. I noticed that when I used the roller, my nose started running. I also feel that my skin looks even more radiant after I have used it because of the increased blood flow to my face. I occasionally roll in the morning but definitely in the evening. It’s very relaxing and meditative.

Although I’m not into stones per se, I respect and understand that they have certain metaphysical properties. The lapis stone is said to have many benefits and properties which includes enhancing intellectual ability, encouraging honesty, and has various healing properties.

Intimissimi Mina Bra. New, well-fitting underwear is the pick-me-up you never knew you needed. When you have on new underwear, you walk differently. You talk differently. Your clothes seem to look and feel better too. Or maybe that’s just me. But good underwear is the stuff dreams are made of and I’ve made it a habit to edit and buy new underwear every few months. It’s really easy to buy panties and I rarely pass up a good 5 for $30 deal (hello Target and Vicki’s Secret). Trying to find good, supportive bras without breaking the bank is another story. A chore if you will. Not to talk too much about my lady parts, but lets just say I carry around a sizable, weighty inheritance from my mom and aunties. Any bra just wont do. I can never seem to be able to go into a store, grab a few bras and go on about my business. I have to plan ahead. Do research. Perform deep cleansing breaths. Do warm up and mobility exercises to prepare for all of the putting on and taking off.

I find that many bras just don’t do it for me. And those cute little lacy numbers laugh in my face. Bralettes are a no go unless I’m laying down – sleep. If I blink, there might be some type of slippage. And full coverage is never really full coverage. I always have over boob, under boob, and just a little bit of boob in the actual cup. I’ve even had to reconstruct some bras for better fit. I’m the personification of cups running over. That’s not a bad thing. I just want to keep the goods in the cups. At least in public.

For some reason it is harder to find 34/36 DDD (my usual size) in stores that don’t specialize in undergarments. And I need a bra that is going to pull me in on the sides as well as scoop, lift and sit these girls nicely in my bra. Without bulging, tugging, pulling, or digging. And with quality fabric I might add. This set of criteria costs money. Wacoal bras are my go to which I’ve usually purchased from Nordstrom. The last set of bras I purchased that fit precisely the way I like cost $85. EACH. That is fine but sometimes I’m not in the mood to pay that price for a bra.

In my recent quest for bras with hopefully a slightly lower price point, I stopped into Intimissimi at one of my local malls. It’s a store I usually roll my eyes at and walk past, convinced that nothing will fit. And before you wonder to yourself if I’ve tried Victoria’s Secret bras, they don’t work for me either. Anywhoo, over the course of about an hour, I tried on several beautiful bras that just didn’t meet my standards – spillage, not enough lift, no support at all, no pull. Then I tried on the style Mina. Perfection! No gapping, pulling, digging, sagging. Just that pull, scoop, lift and sit that I love. It fits like a second skin. And this bra retails for $49 which is nice. The day I went in they were having a 50% off sale so I purchased a few bras.

Akira. As if I need another pair of shoes. A week or so ago, when I should have been asleep, I found myself scrolling around on Akira just to “look around”. You know how you go to your favorite site just to “see” what they have going on and you lie tell yourself “i’m not buying anything” ? Well this was one of those moments, while half asleep, that I was going to just “look around”. But then, per usual, I saw a few pairs of shoes and put them in my shopping cart. But I wasn’t going to buy them. You’ve heard of sleep walking, right? Well this was sleep shopping because when I woke up the next morning, my first thought was “I think I bought something”. While going through my emails the next morning, there was an order confirmation so it was true. Oh darn (shrugs shoulders while smirking and imagining outfits to wear).

I bought these. This shoe is perfect because who couldn’t use a pair of spiked flats. Flats are a staple. Spikes put a little stank on everything. But this shoe is what got me. At first glance my thought was NOPE. NEVER. I thought the shoe was hideous. But I kept going back to look at it. I was intrigued. I still think they are hideous. Strange looking. I also think they are beautiful. The construction and quality is A1. I have a lot of great shoes but nothing like these.

Amika Supernova Blonde Moisture And Shine Cream. I like to keep my blonde super blonde. I mean who wouldn’t – especially when you go through the whole bleaching process. When it comes to maintenance, keeping blond hair true blond and not brassy is very important. I have used a lot of toning products that range from shampoos, conditioners and the purple drops that you can add into your styling products. These various products work fine but I’m always open to new products. I tried the Amika Supernova Blonde Moisture and Shine Cream on a whim and was very pleased. It is a purple leave in conditioner that keeps my hair shiny and brightens/tones my blonde immediately – no dullness or brassiness.

Speaking of colored hair, I also decided to try several Olaplex products (0, 3, 4, 5) to use after I do a color process. I don’t concern myself much about hair damage because I cut my hair frequently and keep it ultra short. It’s still good to have specific maintenance products (and routines) when you color whatever hair you have on top of your head.

Jouer Essential Hydrating Lip Oil. The only time I like to wear glossy lips is when I wear nude lip colors or just need a little hydration. Other than that I don’t care to have glossy lips. I haven’t been wearing my usual matte red lip and my mask makes my lips very dry so of course I need some type of hydration and smoothing. I’ve been using the Jouer Essential Hydrating Lip Oil. What is a lip oil you ask? Think of a lip oil as a hybrid of a lip gloss and nourishing oil. Anyway, the packaging is beautiful. When I pull it out to apply, there are lots of “oohs”, “aahs” and “what’s that?”. It has an ample oversized wand to apply the luscious formula which hydrates, repairs and gives a nice shine without stickiness.

Necessaire The Body Lotion. I tried this body lotion on my hands on yet another whim and fell in love immediately. It is unscented and vitamin (B3, C, E) and omega (6, 9) enriched. I want to transition some of my beauty and skin care products to cleaner alternatives. I enjoy this brand because it is a clean (and vegan) brand committed to delivering effective luxurious skincare at a reasonable price. The packaging simple and sophisticated and looks great sitting on my bathroom counter. The body lotion I use primarily on my hands and of course I love it on my body too. It’s rich, creamy, and leaves my skin looking radiant and feeling soft.
