NYFW Spring 2014 Trend Beauty Looks

In beauty, fashion, hair, makeup, Nails, skincare, style on September 16, 2013 at 10:00 am

With Fashion Week, the first think we may think of are the fashion collections.  However, we must not forget the beauty (hair, makeup, nails, accessories) as all these elements are inter-related.

A common theme for makeup from the shows have been flawless skin, something that will never go out of style.  There was minimal blush and contouring however the brows appeared to be a bit fuller.  The biggest focal point was on the lips in shades of pepto pink in more of a matte finish as well as orange, which definitely had a high impact backstage.  Both of these lips were paired with an opalescent eye.   There were many references to the feline flick which looks and feels like a more toned down version of the cat eye and although a smoky won’t ever go away, the spring time will also lend itself to a softer more transparent eye.

The nail category, which shows no signs of slowing down,  is an area where many designers also took many creative liberties.   With all of the options in textures, dimensions, finishes, designs and of course color, the creativity definitely definitely made an impact.  In addition, variations on the traditional such as reverse french manicures, varying french tips in different colors to half moon designs at the base/tip of the nail, choices have come a long way from basic french manicure, airbrushing and decals.   Not every nail look was  intricate as there were several designers who kept the look simple in shades of neutrals and pastes which was equally beautiful.

There were a many ponytail, braid, and up-dos on the runway which showed off the creativity and imagination of the artists (hair) which is sure to inspire many looks on the real-way.

New York Fashion Week Favorite Looks

New York Fashion Week Spring  has been well under way (September 5-12) and here are some of my favorite looks from this season’s Fashion Week.

Throwback to decades past – 50’s 60,’s and 70’s,  there are many elements that we can take from the runway to the real way to upgrade, or redefine our existing wardrobe especially where color and texture is concerned.  There are also lots of pastels as well as beige, black, white and pops of color like yellow.  Many textiles range from linen to lace.  Flower motifs and details such as cowl necks and jewels are the details that define the looks.  There is also a lot of flirtiness in the air.

Michael Kors – Fun Feminine and Flirty.  I love the added details such as thin belts to give soft definition to the waist.  I also appreciate the minimal, but complimentary color palette.  Sheer and tasteful fabrics and blazer jackets that are soft and flowy.

Oscar de la Renta –  I absolutely love the more significant texture to the clothing.  There is an undeniable femininity and flintiness to the clothing.  The lace and embroidery most definitely lends itself to a very ladylike image.

3.1 Phillip Lim –  His collection is characterized by clean, almost stiff lines yet very feminine .  The details – oversized staples, belt which are used sparingly.

Carolina Herrera –  I appreciate length of the full skirts which lends itself to a certain air of glamour, femininity and elegance.   Not much skin is showing but the looks are very sexy.

Make Your Fragrance Last Longer

Have you ever felt like your fragrance fades away quickly?  There are a few things to understand about your fragrance and why some last longer than others.

Lets start first with formulation.  There are many forms of a fragrance such as pure perfume or perfume oil, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau fraiche – all of which have varying amounts of oil which affect how long the fragrance stays on.

In addition, there are some other things to consider when wearing a fragrance such as:

  1. Spray your pulse points: inner elbows, back of knees, ankles, back of ears, chest/cleavage, and inner wrist.  These places are warmer and will help emit the fragrance.
  2. Use a combination of ancillary products.  These are the complementary products such as shower gels, body lotions and powders.  These can usually be purchased separately and can also be found in gift sets.
  3. Hydrated skin.  Fragrance evaporates more quickly on dry, flaky skin.  Try exfoliating first and following up with a rich body butter or oil (preferably light in fragrance or no fragrance at all if not using ancillary products) then layer your fragrance on.

Fragrance Notes

In beauty, fragrance on September 11, 2013 at 10:15 am

Oftentimes, when references are made to fragrances, the term “note” is used.  What exactly is a note?  A note is a description of the scent that one can smell.  Based on the fragrance pyramid, fragrances are made up of three notes:

English: A fragrance pyramid

  1. Top Note which is the initial scent that you smell.  Usually lasting anywhere from 5-30 minutes, the top note is the most volatile and will evaporate very quickly.
  2. Middle note which is often referred to as the heart note.  This develops 10-30 minutes after the initial top note.  It is the body of the fragrance and is usually warmer.
  3. Bottom note which gives the fragrance its weight and slows down the evaporation of the fragrance that has developed after a few hours.  This gives and indication of what the fragrance smells like on you.

In addition, there are some fragrances that have only one note and are referred to as linear.  With a linear fragrance which doesn’t “develop”, one will usually experience the notes at the same time.  Juliette Has A Gun is a fragrance in the linear category.  Made of a single element called Ambroxan, it is used in perfumery as a back note.

What to consider when choosing a fragrance

Just because a fragrance is popular or your best friend or favorite celebrity wears (or creates) a fragrance doesn’t mean it is the fragrance for you.  There are a few things to consider when choosing a fragrance.

  1. Body chemistry/ph level affects the way a fragrance  develops and smells on a person and therefore does not smell the same on everyone.
  2. Your favorite fragrance that you wore at 25 may not smell the same on you at 35.  For example, years ago, I used to wear Carolina Herrera 212.  It was amazing.  Not so much anymore.  The fragrance pretty much smells the same in the bottle but definitely not on me.
  3. The juice (concentration of oils in a fragrance) smells differently from the bottle, the nozzle, what is actually sprayed in the air as well as what is on the fragrance strip so it is best to begin judging a fragrance based on the way it actually develops on your skin.

Having said that, when considering a new fragrance, try getting a sample of that particular fragrance and wearing it for a couple of hours before making a decision.

Viva La Juicy Noir

The Juicy Couture franchise of fragrances have been and will always be  very popular fragrances which smell amazing on other people but have never smelled such on me.  When they launched their newest fragrance, Viva La Juicy Noir, a rendition of their best selling fragrance, I figured it would be the same scenario and initially decided to pass on the fragrance.  Thing is, I couldn’t resist that pretty little pink metallic bottle with that black bow, and, well, I decided to give it a try.  I was pleasantly surprised.  It is a warm, sultry, sophisticated fragrance that develops nicely
Viva La Juicy Noir has notes of honeysuckle giving the fragrance it’s sweetness but is grounded with notes of sandalwood which definitely keeps it from smelling too fruity.  The only drawback is that my strategically placed spritzes didn’t last too long (only 3-4 hours).  I will say, however, it is still a beautiful fragrance that garnered many compliments.
